Creating secure passwords is essential for protecting your devices and electronic accounts. It is the first line of defense against hackers and data thieves who might steal sensitive information or wreak havoc on your tech.

Despite their importance, however, people sometimes neglect using secure passwords, either out of ignorance or in favor of convenience. To address these pitfalls, we’ve compiled a list of password best practices, as well as some tips that can turn a security hassle into security success!

How to Create Secure Passwords

The key to creating a secure password is complexity. Hackers use a multitude of password-cracking tools to try and access your tech, but the longer and more complicated a password is, the harder it is for them to break in.

Most cybercriminals are interested in quick and easy access as opposed to time-consuming processes. Think of it this way: would a robber spend all their time trying to get past an elaborate door lock or would they move on to the house with something much simpler?

But how do you make a password complex enough to thwart attempts to unlock your data? Here are some guidelines to follow:

  • Use at least 12 characters, but longer is better!
  • Make one or several alphabetical characters UPPER CASE and the rest lower case.
  • Add one or more numbers.
  • Add one or more symbols.
  • Use unique passwords for every single account, and never repeat old passwords!
